Ceremonies to pay tribute to veterans

Organizations, schools, colleges and businesses in the Twin Counties will honor and show respect to the men and women who served in the U.S. military during the annual Veterans Day holiday.

The Joint Veterans Committee of Nash and Edgecombe Counties will hold its traditional Veterans Day ceremony from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Rocky Mount Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park. The memorial, which was a joint effort of the city of Rocky Mount, local veterans and friends of Jack Laughery, was established as a tribute to all area veterans who have served in the different military branches of the armed forces.

At the ceremony, the Nash Central High School Junior ROTC color guard will be performing the ceremonial honors and a rifle salute to all fallen veterans. Retired Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Leo Nieves will be performing a tribute to prisoners of war and those missing in action.

Even though the Edgecombe County Veterans’ Military Museum will be closed on Veterans Day, the museum will still honor veterans as the museum will commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the ending of World War I by holding a special Armistice Day event at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Veterans Memorial on the Tarboro Town Common. In addition, the Pilot Club will hold a flag-raising ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at the Veterans Memorial on the Tarboro Town Common.

A local school will be showing appreciation to veterans. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School at 331 Hammond St. in downtown Rocky Mount will host its annual Veterans Day Breakfast at 8 a.m. Monday. The event will have school children, teachers and administration staff serving breakfast to veterans and the families of students who attend the school.

N.C. Wesleyan College will hold a Veterans Day Salute at 10 a.m. Monday at the flagpole on the college’s campus. The guest speaker for the ceremony will be Chief Deputy Brandon Medina and Lt. Marcus Bynum of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office. Refreshments will be served following the program.

Businesses have plans to celebrate veterans. Sheetz will have a special Veterans Day offer to all veterans and active-duty military personnel by offering a free meal of a 6-inch turkey sub that includes a regular size foundation drink. The deal will also include an offer of a free carwash. The deals are offered at any of the Sheetz locations, which includes stores in Rocky Mount and Nashville. Military identification or proof of service must be presented to qualify.’

Local veterans can also receive a free meal from local restaurants in the area. K&W Cafeterias will offer all active and retired military personnel a complimentary meal from 11 a.m. to closing on Monday. The meal includes a choice of entree, two vegetables, bread and beverage. Military identification or proof of service must be presented to qualify.”

Golden Corral will host its 2018 Military Appreciation Night from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday when veterans and active duty military service members will be provided a free buffet meal.
