The Jets have signed QB Davis Webb to the active roster and placed TE Neal Sterling on injured reserve.
Webb originally signed to the Green & White’s practice squad in September after being waived by the crosstown Giants and clearing waivers. He did not see any regular-season action for the Giants in 2017 and connected on 52.8% of his passes this preseason for 283 yards and a TD.
The 6’5″, 230-pound Webb, a third-round selection of the Giants in the 2017 draft, played his senior season at California and completed 61.6% of his passes for 4,295 yards with 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Webb could serve as the club’s backup quarterback Sunday when the Jets host the Bills at MetLife Stadium. Rookie signal caller Sam Darnold is dealing with a strained foot and Josh McCown will make his first start of the 2018 season.
Sterling started four games for the Green & White this season and recorded six receptions for 47 yards, but suffered two head injuries in a seven-game span. The fourth-year veteran, who originally entered the league as a wide receiver for the Jaguars, has totaled 24 receptions for 239 yards in 35 games.
