If it wasn’t for bad luck, Drake Caggiula would not have any luck at all.

The Edmonton Oilers put the winger on injured reserve Thursday after hurting his hand in practice in St. Louis on Tuesday.

“He’s day-to-day, so all we’re waiting for is the swelling to go down and we’re good to go,” said Oilers head coach Ken Hitchcock. “So it might be a couple of games here before he’s ready to go.”

Caggiula, 24, has seven goals and 10 points in 23 games for the Oilers this season. He was beginning to find his stride as a smaller, gritty forward who wasn’t afraid to get to the tough areas of the ice and throw his weight around.

He reportedly jammed his hand on the ice during the end of the practice session Tuesday, a day before the Oilers defeated the Blues 3-2 in a shootout.

“It was during a fun exercise at the end of practice,” Hitchcock said.

Having been placed on injured reserve, the earliest Caggiula can return to the lineup is Tuesday, on the road against the Colorado Avalanche.
