Alex McGarry homered and then drove in the winning run in the ninth inning, and Adley Rutschman’s single brought across three more runs to power the No. 6 Oregon State Beavers to a dramatic 7-3 victory against the No. 2 UCLA Bruins on Saturday night in Los Angeles.
Oregon State reliever Brandon Eisert struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to slam the door on the Bruins. It was part of a 10-strikeout effort by Eisert, who recorded the win and improved to 5-0 on the season.
The Beavers’ victory evened the three-game series at 1-1, with Game 3 set for noon Sunday.
With the game tied 3-3 entering the ninth, the Beavers loaded the bases with one out for McGarry, who singled up the middle for his second RBI of the game. That brought up Rutschman, whose single scored Greg Fuchs and Wade Meckler. McGarry came home on an error on the same play to give OSU its 7-3 margin.
Eisert allowed three hits in 4 2/3 innings, going the rest of the way after relieving OSU starter Bryce Fehmel in the fifth. Fehmel allowed all three UCLA runs on three hits and struck out three with a walk.
UCLA broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth when Matt McLain tripled to score Michael Toglia. Then McLain scored to give the Bruins a two-run lead.
Two innings later, Joe Casey scored on Meckler’s grounder to second base, and then McGarry cranked his solo homer to tie the game at 3-3 before the Beavers came through with their big ninth inning.
